Used to be Blue 8"x16" $225

I will miss these old barns around here when we go back to Texas.  We live by the lake here in Alabama and we are close to Huntsville which is a pretty large city.  But you can drive in almost any direction and within 10 minutes or so, you are out in the country and there are the barns and usually some cows hanging out too!  Being a city girl, this is so interesting to me.  Ane of course the old wood can be rustic red or as in this case--the barn was once painted blued

Backlight 6"x12" $195 SOLD

I just love this painting!!  Sometimes it all comes together.  What I like is the simplicity of those background trees and then that cow just glowing in the light and throwing back all the colors of the background.

Mission Door 8"x16" $225

Every once in awhile I like to show how I plan out a painting using a photo as a starting point.  As you can see I moved that tree over to give balance to the design.  I love the geometry of this view of the mission.  And then the shadow of the tree is is so organic and the combo to me is just delicious!

San Antonio Mission 8"x16" $225

Another mission painting for the River Art Group Gallery in San Antonio.  I just love the shadow play on those palm trees.  There's a little glare on the upper left of this photo.  I think photographing the artwork and getting the true color is hard.  You wouldn't believe how many pics I take in different light locations just to get a close to life image.  For instance-this painting is slightly warmer in tone than the photo, but if I try to warm it up with the photo program--it usually over does it and then it is too far off from the original.  So this is my best attempt at a true image.

Heading Home 8"x16" $225

I really struggled with this one.  I wanted to create a twilight feel that really wasn't in the photo I used.  All the colors had to be greyed down a bit and highlights had to reflect that pink glow from a dieing sunlight.  Then I had a horrible time with the foreground.  Trees, animals and houses at least have a specific shape to interpret, but that expanse of ground is bascically flat or maybe rolling so its the artist's colors that create an interest.  I painted and wiped off at least 3 times.  So this is the best I can do for now!

Ready to Ride 12"x12" oil $195.00 SOLD

You might say--oh another Riverwalk painting.  But I am saying--oh I like the way my interpretation of trees is developing--and how the water is depicted so simple but so liquid!!  That is what I mean when I say --its not what you paint, but how you paint it that is so much fun!

Cactus and Bluebonnets 6"x12" $165 SOLD

Texas Hill Country has its own kind of rugged beauty.  When the Bluebonnets bloom it is truly spectacular!

Cut Glass 10"x10" oil $165.00 SOLD

Back to the bling bling!  Thought this cut glass would be a challenge and it was.  I love yellow and purple as a combo and I think this one really pops!

Late Afternoon 12"x12" $195.00

The late afternoon sun warmed everything up and made some beautiful colors.  It was a challenge to refrain from placing any blue in the sky.  Your mind says "blue sky", but if you really look,  you see that the sky is just as influenced by that late afternoon sun as the landscape!

Mission Shadow 8"x16" $195.00 SOLD

Will be going back to San Antonio soon so always need replacewment paintings for the River Art Gallery at la Villita.  Hadn't done any mission pics for awhile so why not.  I'm always looking for a different point of view and this shadow thrown by the palm tree just fit the bill!

Rose Window 6"x12" $165 SOLD

This is the Rose window at Mission San Jose in San Antonio.  Alot of people don't know that there are 4 other missions there besides the Alamo.  They are all really interesting and worth the effort to see.  Now when painting an ornate design like this, you have to really squint and simplify the shapes lest you get all picky with the ornateness and miss the strength of the design.

New Mexico Light 14"x18" $325

Felt like getting back to my roots a little.  New Mexico is endless fascination for me.

Where's Mama? 12"x12" $195 SOLD

Don't usually do this but after posting that last pic I was not happy with the focus or the color.  This one is truer to the painting.  I think the over cast sky outside made the pic colors too cool so moved near a warm lamp light and got a better color.

Geraniums Again 12"x12" $195.00

I don't seem to tire of these geraniums.  To me,  each view is entirely different because I am painting the shapes and the light rather than just the flowers.

Geranium Shapes 12"x12" $195

I love these shapes and shadows.  They have an oriental feeling to me and I don't know why!  Maybe it is because there is no deliniation in the background--in other words no horizon line to indicate a table on which the glass is placed.  There is only the variation of value and color from top to bottom to create the depth.

Maverick Plaza Fountain 8"x8" $145

Needed some more small paintings for my Riverwalk Gallery.  I love this fountain that is close by the gallery in la Villita.  It is most beautiful in summer with the pots of geraniums around it.  There's a little shadow from the frame at the top, but you get the idea.  I like the white frames.

Demos from Vaue Workshop

Had my first workshop of the summer in Huntsville.  These are the demos I did to illustrate value with front light and then back light.  The little landscape was to illustrate how values lighten with distance to create a vista.  I wish I had taken photos of some of the students work because they did really well!  I am somewhat new to this teaching business so next time I will do better and take more photos.

Chile Swirl 10"x10" $165

I think I am addicted to these still lifes!  Anything with glass and reflections--Bling Bling!  Just a reminder for all my Alabama friends--this Thursday will be the opening Art Stroll of the summer in Huntsville.  It is from 4:30 to 8:30.  Last year it was situated around the downtown square but this year it will be  by the Constitution Village also downtown at Madison and Gates Ave..  Something else new this year is that you can buy a drink and carry it around while you look at the art show--whoopie!

Sunday House Window 10"x20" $325.00

A Sunday House is quite common in Texas.  Its a house the ranchers keep in town for Sundays when they come into town to attend church.  This one is in Fredricksberg, Texas and belongs to my friend Jamie Maverick. The term "maverick" cattle came from her great grandfather's preference for no fences.

Italian Boats 10"x20" $325.00

Needed a change from the still lifes.  So looked through my photo file and came up with this view from our trip to Italy a couple of years ago.  What attracted me was the boats in the foreground in shadow and then
background all warm and bright.  Hardest part was getting the clouds to sit back in the sky.  They are light in value but can't be warmer than the sand or they pop out and you don't get that vista feeling of distance.  This is an example of how warm and cool colors can be so important.

Tomato Vanity 12"x12" museum wrapped canvas $195.00 SOLD

Maybe I should name this "How do I Look?'  Anyway lots of reflections and that is always fun to paint.  Reflections give you an opprotunity for repetition in a painting, but because each reflection is a different shape and in a different placement--it also offers variety-yea!

Chiles Again! 12"x12" gallery wrapped canvas $195.00

I just love the abstract patterns of these still lifes.  I'm also trying to pump up the color as color is one of the joys of life.  That being said--I will be teaching a workshop on Value through the Huntsville Art League in June.  June 15th, a Saturday, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Huntsville Art League building.  You can sign up, pay (it is $60) and get a supply list from their website.  Color is a joy but Value is the basis for understanding how shapes and depth are formed in painting.  I will also be teaching a workshop on color in July and one on focal point in August.  So check it out and join me for some really fun exercises to improve your painting!

Auburn 16x 20

Just finished this piece for the annual Auburn Knights fund raiser .  Hoping this will appeal as it depicts not only the watch tower, but also the old Music Building in honor of all those Auburn Knights who studied there.

Bell Pepper Plate 12"x12" $195.00

This will probably be my last posting for a few weeks as we are heading back to Alabama for the summer.  I am signed up for three Art Strolls  in Huntsville for June, July and August.  Also have submitted to have a show at the Central Library in Birmingham so am looking forward to some fun art events as well as living by the lake!

Alamo at Night 8"x10" $195.00

Getting ready for the Starving Artist Show at La Villita this coming Saturday and Sunday.  Had to have a t least one Alamo painting so here it is!  The show is free to the public and I am booth #151 so come and say hi if you should attend.

What's on your plate? 10"x10" $165.00 SOLD

The challenge here was to make the neutral background of the white plate interesting but also subordinate to the food objects.  That circular shape of the plate was especially difficult and I may go back and correct it as it is now looking a little squarish to me in tha upper left hand corner!

Hide and Seek 10"x10" $165.00 SOLD

Really tried to have less defined edges in this one so that the lime that is behind the gass jar is super simplified.  The sharpest edge in the whole painting    is on the lime  in the middle of the canvas.  Hopefully this is the edge that draws your first glance.  Then the shadow and round bottom edge of the jar pulls you into the circular patterns formed by the light and shadows.  This is what artists call "transportation"--leading your eye around the painting.  The background edge of the gold cloth is the least defined edge because it needs to stay back and give the painting some depth.

Limey! 10"x10" $165.00

This is the first of I hope many 10"x10" still lifes.  I can see now that I am pretty adept at creating solid shapes and placing them in an interesting pattern.  Next I'd like to concentrate on some more creative interpretations of the edges of things.  Sounds like alot of "art speak" and I have never liked the pretention of all that.  So really what I mean is that I'm getting a little bored with these so time to try something different!

Guacamole! 12"x12" $195.00

Love the colors in this one!  I have put some of these still lifes up for auction on the Daily Paintworks web site where I also have an online gallery.  The way it works is that I post the painting in their auction catagory.  I place a minimum bid on it-in this case--$100.00.  It is then open to bidding for one week.  The highest bidder uses Paypal to purchase the painting which is sold to the highest bid plus $25 mailing.  Of course if one of my fellow San Antonians purchased a painting,  I would deliver it free and reimburse them the mailing fee.  This is an excellent way to purchase art for very reasonable prices.  Some pieces start with a minimum as low as $5.  Go check it out!  DailyPaintworks.com.   If you can't find it--go to my blog--pamelaclarkson.blogspot.com and there is a link.

Lemon Shot 12"x12" $195

I love painting glass!  The reflections and highlights form such wonderful shapes.  I also liked this color scheme.  Purple and yellow always pop bnecuase they are complementary colors (opposite each other on the color wheel--like red and green).

Pot and Chiles 12"x12" gallery wrapped canvas SOLD

These are just what I needed to push my colors and design.  I am going to order some 10"x10" canvas so i can do a series of these to show at the River Art Group Gallery in La Villita.  It is a co-op gallery so the members are limited to the amount of paintings they can show.  I am allowed 6 small paintings (under 22" united inch-that's the length plus the width) and 2 large paintings-over 22" united inch.  These united inches also include the frame.  So these frameless pieces will allow me 6 larger pieces than if i had a frame on them.

Chiles & Limes 12"x12" $195.00 SOLD

Got a little shine on the left hand side of this painting photo.  Glare is always a problem.  Anyway I am really having fun with these still lifes.  They are simple and bold and I am learning alot about shadows.  Also learning that it is a challenge to make those large simple shapes of background or negative space interesting.  I will try to pusdh both of those areas in the next painting. I still have to paint the sides of this painting as it is on a frameless 2" deep canvas--tomorrow!

21 January, 2013

still life 1 12"x12" unframed 2" deep canvas $195 SOLD

Have decided to do a series of still lifes.  Still life always refreshes my love of the shapes and edges of things.  The objects form beautiful shapes with the background-really very abstract in nature, but just using real objects.  I love that balancing act!

Riverwalk Classic 11"x14" $275

This is a classic view of Rosita's Bridge at the Riverwalk.  I find high keyed colors very challenging to paint.  I'm not sure I brought anything very original to this view but I do like the trees that form the background.  They were dark and large leafed on the left side of the painting--then in the middle were those fine leafed trees that look violet in the harsh light.  Finally the trees on the right were leafy but more traditionally green.  The building on the far right was so white that it really stole the spotlight from the bridge--so I placed the two people right at the entry to the bridge to catch your eye, lead you over the bridge and away from that bulding!

City Lights 12"x24" $425

Happy New Year everyone!  After devoting about 2 weeks to Christmas madness, I am happy to be back in the studio.  I love these night scenes and all this is right in our own city of San Antonio.
